Common dogwood
The Common dogwood is an ornamental shrub native to Europe and western Asia. Its scientific name is Cornus sanguinea and belongs to Cornaceae family.. It is also known by the common name of false cherry. It lives in moist forests in riparian areas, along river beds in moist and shady. It measures about 3 feet tall. Its flowers are white, hermaphrodite and grow in clusters. The blooms have within four stamens. This medicinal plant has fruits which are red berries, colored rounded and about 5 mm. in diameter. The bark of this tree is colored black. This feature is used to make black ink. It is rich in gallic acid, tannins, essential oils, resins, gums, and whelk. The leaves of this herb are reddish in the beam. The edges of the leaves are whole and dark, being lighter on the part of the underside. With regard to the medicinal properties of this plant is astringent and antipyretic. It should be well informed about this medicinal plant before use, since in high doses can be toxic.
